The Disadvantages Of The Depo Provera Shot

<
Aside from oral birth control pills, the Depo Provera shot is one of the most dangerous forms of contraceptives.  Unfortunately, many women have used the Depo Provera shot without realizing the long term impact on their health.  Before trying this form of contraceptive, many doctors might recommend you try other methods first.
While the Depo Provera shot is only designed to be effective for three months, it can last much longer.  If you wind up with side effects, these can go on for months and years.  Side effects include weight gain, headaches, and nausea.   If you want to reverse the Depo Provera shot, it is not possible.  The most you will be able to do is try to flush the hormone from your body by drinking as much water as possible.

Once you have received the Depo Provera shot, you should not be able to conceive.  That said, 1 to 3 out of 100 women do get pregnant during the three month time frame.    If you do get pregnant, the fetus may develop a number of malformations.  In addition, if you decide to proceed with the pregnancy, miscarriage and pre-term delivery can also occur.  On the other hand, some women that want to get pregnant, and do not receive a new Depo Provera shot may find they cannot get pregnant.

Along with the potential to cause permanent harm to your reproductive ability, the Depo Provera shot is known to cause thinning of your bones.  Because most women will lose bone mass after menopause, the Depo Provera shot greatly increases the risk of osteoporosis. Perhaps it can be said that all you need to do in order to finish the job of destroying your skeleton is to drink plenty of colas, which contain another calcium leacher, phosphoric acid. Some women also experience hair loss and increased amounts of acne.  If you pride yourself on having beautiful hair, or smooth skin, you may definitely want to try other forms of contraception.  It is important to realize that the way you look can easily magnify other harmful effects caused by this type of birth control. Ironically, women that have taken the Depo Provera shot also experience decreased libido.  Many women also wind up experiencing depression and anxiety.  Depending on the severity of the emotional and mental effects, you may wind up needing to take anti-depressants and other types of tranquilizers.

As with many other kinds of birth control, the Depo Provera shot can lead to a cessation of your monthly period.  While this may be seen as an advantage, it may not occur in every case.  Unfortunately, some women may experience heavier bleeding, and also bleeding during unusual times.

Over the years, researchers have learned that the Depo Provera shot causes a great deal of damage to a woman's body.  Along with the potential to ruin your chances to have children in the future, this form of birth control is known to cause permanent bone loss, as well as long term emotional problems.  If you are just starting to use birth control, you would be better off trying other methods first.

Birth Control Planning and Your Faulty Memory

By Mike Selvon
All the common factors are indeed important when doing your birth control planning, such as how effective each method is, whether you'd be comfortable using it, whether you have some condition that might prevent using some methods or make others preferable. But there's one factor which, ironically, you should never forget, and that is your own memory. If in fact you have a terrible memory, then birth control options that rely on said memory should probably move much lower down on your list.
